FIN Mentorship Program

Federal Internship for Newcomers (FIN) – Mentoring Program

Overview of FINP – What is it?

The Federal Internship for Newcomers Program (FINP) provides newcomers with the opportunity to gain Canadian work experience within the federal government and private sector organizations, with a view to improving integration into the Canadian labour market.

OCISO’s Career Mentoring Program in partnership with FINP provides mentoring support to the Interns within and beyond their Internship.

How do Interns benefit?

An experienced federal government professional (Mentor) provides advice and support for up to eight months.

The goal of FINP Mentoring is to help FIN interns maximize their learning experience by helping Interns to:

  • Develop and implement an employment action plan
  • Define their career objectives and employment search strategies
  • Learn how to fine-tune their resumes, cover letters and interview skills
  • Learn about the Canadian federal government working culture
  • Enhance their understanding of Canadian workplace culture
  • Expand their professional networks

FINP Career Mentors have the opportunity to:

  • Enhance their cross-cultural competency
  • Develop career coaching and leadership skills
  • Receive professional development training (Intercultural Competency and Mentoring to Employment)
  • Contribute positively to the life of a newcomer to Canada

OCISO provides volunteer Mentors with on-going guidance/tools and conducts a comprehensive follow up with Mentors and Mentees during the mentoring period. This support and training provides volunteer Mentors with the opportunity to further develop valuable coaching, leadership, and cross-cultural competencies.
