Resume workshop for mentees

Workshops for Mentors (Optional)
We offer optional employment research and cross-cultural communication workshops for mentors. The Employment Research Workshop is facilitated by Wayne Pagani, who is a Career Coach. Wayne will take you through labour market research, value proposition, informational meetings, and more to help better prepare you for supporting your mentee.
The Cross-Cultural Communication workshop is facilitated by Karima Kara, who is a cross-cultural communication specialist. Karima will help you better communicate with your mentee and help them understand the Canadian Workplace Culture.

Mentoring Café Networking Events
Mentoring Café is a series of workshops and networking events, focusing on engaging CED mentors and mentees to discuss topics on workplace culture, competencies development, challenges and tips of job searching etc. for creating a living network of collaborative dialogue around questions that matter in service to real work.

We hold Express Mentoring events a few times a year. Ten mentors and ten mentees are invited. Mentees have ten minutes to ask questions and general career advice from each mentor.
Provide us your Vulnerable Sector Check or a valid security clearance obtained in the last five years. If you don’t have either of them, we will support you in the process of getting your Vulnerable Sector Check from the police office.
Attend a mandatory orientation session after which you may attend professional development training free of charge.
Meetings occur weekly for approximately one hour at an agreed upon time and location. The mentor is asked to commit a minimum of three months to the mentoring relationship.
How does mentorship work?
The Career Mentoring Program supports internationally educated professionals to obtain employment in their field. Clients are matched with a volunteer Career Mentor working in the same or a related field.Mentors and mentees meet weekly. During these meetings, the mentor will offer guidance and support with respect to
- Developing career objectives
- Canadian workplace language, culture, and etiquette
- Employment research strategies
- Employer engagement strategies
- Networking opportunities – Informational meetings, Networking events, Professional associations, etc.
- Employment application preparation
- Resume, cover letter & interview preparation

Mentors share their knowledge and work experience and assist mentees in navigating through the job search process and transition to a career in Canada.
Mentors assist Mentees by:
- Providing support with developing professional networks
- Explaining Canadian employment practices and requirements
- Identifying skills required in the job market
- Clarifying employer expectations
- Assisting with resumes and cover letters
- Providing support with to job interview preparation and debrief
Mentors have the chance to:
- Work with people from different cultures
- Develop career coaching and leadership skills • Receive professional development training
Career Mentors have:
- At least 2 years of work experience in Ottawa
- Contacts in employment and professional networks
- Good interpersonal, communication and listening skills
- Sensitivity to employment and cultural transition experiences
- Commitment to a mentoring relationship
