Back to School for our LINC Students

By Sharon Deng, Manager, Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program

September ushered in a change in season and a very welcome back to routine for the students in our LINC program.

From the very first day, nearly all of our eight full-time classes and two part-time evening classes were full with a waitlist in the double digits!

Laughter fills the second floor of 1800 Bank Street again as children of our students returned to our daycare.

The day time classes saw teachers diving right in to planning the year on the first day.

A field trip for students is already planned for late September, along with a packed fall schedule featuring guest speakers and an OCISO fair, where students can learn first hand about all the different services we offer.

The school year also started off with a few changes. The evening program has two new teachers, who bring fresh, new ideas and infectious energy.

It was also my first start of school year with OCISO and I am excited to meet all of our LINC teachers and daycare staff. Everyone has been gracious and helpful both to myself and new students who joined us for the first time this year.

As I slowly get to know each student who walks through our doors, I feel grateful that they walk in with a smile everyday. I was speaking to a student who arrived in Canada five months ago. He was excited to be in his very first class and was a bit worried about his new bus schedule because he didn’t want to miss a minute of his English class!

As autumn makes its entrance, look for more exciting changes and excellent programming at OCISO’s LINC.
