Maria moved to Canada from Ecuador in 2016. As an experienced business and marketing specialist with a Masters in International Management and Development, she was hoping to quickly find a job in her profession. But that turned out to be more challenging than she would have ever anticipated.

Maria joined OCISO’s Mentorship Program in December 2016 and was matched with Nadia, Senior Analyst with the Government of Canada.

“From the first time I met my mentor, I noticed we had a lot of things in common.”

Maria and Nadia met every week over coffee to discuss Maria’s job search. Nadia supported Maria to improve her resume, hone her job interview skills, develop professional networks, and provided her with tips on the Canadian workplace culture to make her job search more successful.

Whilst these are essential tools for any newcomer, it is the human aspect that made this experience so valuable.

“Most importantly, there is that person – your Mentor – listening to your concerns and giving you advice during the hard process of searching for a job.”

In 2017, Maria secured a position within her profession as Program Officer at Employment and Social Development Canada.

“I look forward to continuing our mentor-mentee relationship and would strongly advise Newcomers to find a dedicated Mentor through OCISO.”
